WEST ORANGE, NJ – In a tightly contested game, the Caldwell Chiefs defeated the West Orange Mountaineers 1-0 in Thursday’s girls’ soccer match.

The game started off with the scales tipped in Caldwell’s favor, as they applied most of the offensive pressure early in the first half. West Orange would balance the scale and generate some of their own attack after a near goal on a corner kick by sophomore Kristina Jaeger.

Caldwell, however, would respond to West Orange’s increased offensive pressure. About 33 minutes into the first half, the Chiefs were rewarded for the fruits of their labor. Junior Jamie Hreniuk was able to take a well-executed pass from a teammate, get behind the defense and put the ball past the West Orange sophomore goalkeeper Heidi Paulson.

The goal was extremely important in the game, as it was the only score recorded. Caldwell’s head coach Mike Teshkoyan called the goal “obviously the turning point of the game, because the game had been pretty even to that point.”

West Orange did have ample opportunities to score in the game, including the second half. The team was able to generate scoring chances using a 4-4-2 formation and wide attack, but was not able to score.

“I would like to see us get a shot off quicker. A lot of times players want to switch the ball to the dominant foot to get a perfect shot. We missed a lot of pretty good opportunities within 10 yards of goal,” West Orange coach Lou Mignone stated when evaluating his team’s performance.

Although not happy with the loss, Coach Mignone did like the improvement of the team.

“The last time we played against them it we lost 6-0, and although I am not happy with losing, we reflected a much improved team.”

Caldwell Coach Mike Teshkoyan called West Orange “the most improved team we have played this year.”

With the loss, West Orange falls to 3-7, and with the win, Caldwell levels off at .500 with a 5-5 record.

Both teams will look to improve for their next games, as Caldwell will travel to Millburn on Monday for a 4:00pm match, and West Orange will travel to West Essex on Monday for a 4:00 pm start.
