WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Caldwell College softball team defeated St. Cloud State University, 6-5, at the Rebel Spring Games Monday morning at the DiamondPlex. The 18th-ranked Cougars improve to 6-1 on the year with the victory, while the Huskies fall to 4-7. Caldwell was scheduled to play the University of New Haven in the afternoon but the game was canceled due to rain.

On Saturday, Caldwell College softball coach Dean Johnson recorded the 600th victory of his career, as the Cougars topped Ohio Dominican University, 6-5 in eight innings at the Rebel Spring Games. The Cougars also defeated Lees-McRae, 9-1, in the day's second game to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Monday, a pair of doubles helped St. Cloud State score a run in the bottom of the first inning to lead 1-0. In the top of the fourth, junior Kristen Knorr (Monroeville, NJ / Delsea) singled home junior Megan Fryday (San Marcos, CA / Mission Hills), and sophomore Caitlin McCready (Jupiter, FL / Dwyer) hit a two-run single to bring home junior Sara Zambelli (West Milford, NJ / West Milford) and freshman Lauren Frye (Jupiter, FL / Jupiter) for a 3-1 advantage. The Huskies responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the Cougars scored twice on a sacrifice fly from McCready and a run-scoring single from sophomore Brielle Reighn (Runnemeade, NJ / Triton Regional) to tie the score at 5-5. Then in the seventh, Fryday led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore Rachel Berzak (Cypress, CA / Pacifica), advanced to third on a passed ball and scored the go-ahead run on a bunt from freshman Amy Hickman (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Liberty). St. Cloud State put runners on first and second with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but junior Hanna Walkinshaw (Aptos, CA / Aptos) retired the final batter on a groundout to end the game.

Game Highlights
  • Walkinshaw pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of freshman Sydney Ponto (West Deptford, NJ / West Deptford), who allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking one in 4 2/3 innings

  • Knorr finished with three hits

  • McCready had two hits and three runs batted in
