CALDWELL, NJ - This evening, Tuesday, December 12th, under the direction of head coach Linda Cimino, the Caldwell College Cougars Women’s Basketball team defeated the Queen’s College Knights while at the same time forward Jeanette Anderson scored her 1,000th point!

Anderson, from Lynn, Massachusetts, is currently a junior at Caldwell College where she is majoring in Communications.  In the history of the program, Anderson is now the 15th women’s basketball player here to reach 1,000 career points.  While a student at Lynn English High School, Anderson was the very first player there to ever score 1,000 points as well as get 1,000 rebounds.

According to Caldwell College’s Matt McLagan, “Anderson entered the game needing two points for the 1,000.  She grabbed an offensive rebound and scored less than two minutes into the game.”

With Anderson’s scoring, Caldwell got on the board with an early 13-0 lead. With less than a minute to go until halftime, the Knights came close to taking the lead with the score of 35-32 Cougars.  Cougar’s Jessica Coscia, a sophomore guard from Staten Island, scored a free throw to get Caldwell to 36-32 by the half.

McLagen described: “Caldwell made 5-of-12 from three-point range and shot 43.3 percent from the field in the first half.”

The Knights were able to make a comeback in the second half.  The Cougars came out strong in the first minute, getting the score to 39-32 Cougars, but Knights’  Bria Jackson, a senior from Rochester, New York, and Marie Byrnes, a sophomore from Brooklyn, both scored three pointers bringing the Knights to a 49-48 advantage with 11:52 remaining.

“A jumper and a three from Torey Jones put Caldwell back on top, and another three from Coscia later in the half gave the Cougars a 60-55 edge with 5:16 left to play,” explained McLagen.  Jones is a senior guard from Providence, Rhode Island.

“Bria Jackson struck again for Queens, hitting two free throws and a three to tie the score at 60-60 with four minutes left,” described McLagen.  Jeanette Anderson then scored a basket and, “Byrnes drained another three to put the Knights back on top, 63-62 with 3:14 on the clock. The Cougar defense tightened up the rest of the way, forcing a turnover and three missed shots down the stretch."

Anderson scored another basket, along with a basket from junior guard, Marielle Duryea, from Middle Village, New York. McLagen expressed: “Those baskets plus three free throws from Jones, proved to be the difference;  the Cougars closed out the win.”  The final score for the Cougar’s over the Knights was 69-63.

Caldwell College’s Matt McLagan went on to detail the player accomplishments of this game:  “Torey Jones led all the players with 30 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Her five three-pointers on the night give her 200 treys for her career, leaving her two shy of the school record of 202, set by Kirsty Leedham from 2007-11.”

Jeanette Anderson scored 17 points throughout the game, along with 13 rebounds.
“That was her ninth double-double of the season,” commented McLagen.

Freshman guard from Cologne, Germany, Fahime Farzanessa scored 8 points, and performed 4 steals.

Jessica Coscia registered seven assists.

The best players for the Knights were Bria Jackson, who made five three-pointers for Queens and had 25 points, and Marie Byrnes, who scored 20 points.

Tonight’s Caldwell College victory over Queen’s College was played in the George R. Newman Center, and was a non-conference game. The Cougars now have a 3-10 record for the year, while the Knights fell to 3-4.

On Saturday, December 15th, the Cougars will play a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference home game against Felician College, at 1pm in the Newman Center.
