Burglars Target Two South Orange Homes

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Police are investigating two burglaries where would-be thieves planned to use windows to enter homes.

A Turrell Avenue resident told police that he saw two people enter the backyard of a neighboring house at about 4:15 p.m. on Feb 14.  Responding officers found that a side window screen had been cut. The subjects, described as black males both 6f eet 3 inches tall, were seen fleeing the area on foot.

A Glenview Road resident reported that someone broke into their house through basement window sometime between 2 p.m. on Feb. 14 and 1:45 p.m. on Feb. 19. The suspect was unable to access the first floor due to deadbolts on the basement door. No items were removed from the house.

A Toms River man was assaulted while plowing a Scotland Road driveway at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 14.  The victim stated that he got into an argument with another driver over blocked traffic before the suspect got out of his vehicle and began punching the victim in the face. The suspect, described as a large black male, fled before the victim was able to obtain any more identifying information.

In other police news:

  • An employee of a gas station on Irvington Avenue stated that someone stole gas at approximately 9:20 a.m. on Feb. 18. The suspect, described as a black male about 30 years old, ordered $40 worth of gas and fled the scene in their black Lincoln SUV without paying.
     
  • Pavel Shevchenko, 26, of South Orange, was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Feb. 20. A detective stopped Shevchenko on South Orange Avenue to question him about suspicious activity. During the investigation, the detective discovered that Shevchenko was carrying heroin and arrested him without incident.
     
  • A Seton Hall University employee told police that someone keyed the passenger side of their 2010 Kia sometime between 2 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 20.
