Burglars Make Off With Laptop, Jewelry in 2 South Orange Burglaries

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Police are investigating thefts from two South Orange homes.

An Irvington Avenue resident told police that someone entered her apartment and stole her laptop and some jewelry from her bedroom sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 21. The victim said that she was not sure whether the apartment door was locked, but there were no signs of forced entry.

An Eder Terrace resident reported that someone broke into their house and stole a wrist watch from the second floor sometime around 1 p.m. on Feb. 14. The suspect gained entry by smashing the window of a rear door and unlocking it from the inside. Multiple dressers were also ransacked, but nothing else was reported missing.

One person was also arrested in connection with a previous theft.

Anthony Decree, 43, of Orange, was arrested on Feb. 25 on charges he drove away from a gas station on Irvington Avenue on Feb. 18 without paying.

In other police news:

  • William Brummel III, 30, of South Orange, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence shortly before 6 a.m. on Feb. 22.  Police responded to reports of a one-car accident on South Orange Avenue and found Brummel asleep behind the wheel with a strong odor of alcohol coming from him.
     
  • A Montrose Avenue resident told police that he observed suspicious activity while warming up his car outside his house. The resident said that he observed someone exit a vehicle on the street and approach him. When the suspect realized that there was someone in the car, he fled in a silver Toyota Corolla followed by a Jeep. The suspect was described as a clean-shaven black male about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds
    .
  • Sean Bass, 44, of New York, was arrested when police responded to call of a disturbance on an NJ Transit bus on the corner of Irvington Avenue and Prospect Street shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 23.  When officers arrived, Bass refused to pay the fare and became combative. He was subdued and arrested without further incident.
     
  • An employee of an establishment on Sloan Street told police that someone entered the employee area and removed the contents of their wallet sometime between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Feb. 23.
     
  • A food delivery employee reported that someone took a meal without paying on the campus of Seton Hall University at approximately 3:45 a.m. on Feb. 23.  Further investigation is being conducted by campus security.
     
  • Scott Mungin, 43, of East Orange, was arrested when police responded to reports of a disturbance at a Vose Avenue apartment complex at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Feb. 27.  Responding officers determined that the subject had been distributing a controlled substance and that the disturbance was related to its sale.
