SCOTCH PLAINS-FANWOOD NJ- The Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys soccer team lost a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon at the hands of Bridgewater Raritan, 2-1.
James Murphy scored the lone goal for SPF on a rebound of a shot from Brian Rubin with six minutes to go in the first half.
“That’s soccer, the ball bounces in different directions, and sometimes it doesn’t go your way. We have to bounce back as a family, and not let this loss affect us,” said SPF midfielder Zach Lipshitz.
After 72 minutes, SPF was leading, 1-0, until there was a penalty kick awarded to Bridgewater-Raritan after a hand ball by Christian Isolda. Bridgewater-Raritan capitalized after SPF keeper Dan Korduba allowed a rebound after making a save on the penalty kick. Five minutes later Bridgewater-Raritan scored with three minutes remaining, making it a 2-1 final.
“In the second half we slowly lost control of the midfield, and Bridgewater-Raritan began to capitalize. Overall, we really need to work on finishing our chances,” said SPF midfielder David Valian.
The 6-3 Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders will host Cranford Thursday at 4 p.m.
