CHATHAM, NJ - Dan Orefice dashed home from third base in the sixth inning and Mike Fedyna caught the final out of the game in the seventh as Bramnick Law Firm held on to defeat Charley’s Aunt, 6-5, and earn the Chatham Men’s Modified Pitch Softball League Championship on July 29, 2013, at Shepard Kollack Field.
Bramnick Law Firm claimed the league title in only its second year of competition. BLF ended third in the regular-season standings, but won two playoff series to take the league crown. BLF swept the final series, 2-0, over Charley’s Aunt, the 2011 and 2012 league champion.
The final contest was a back and forth battle, distinguished by reliable pitching, tight defense, and six tag plays at home plate. Catcher Tim Wrynn teamed up with pitcher Jason Shaw for BLF. Bob Frascella pitched for Charley's Aunt.
BLF led off the bottom of the sixth with consecutive singles by Adam Artiano, Mike Fedyna, Orefice and Ken Downey to tie the game at 5-5. One out later, with runners at first and third, Jason DiTonno bounced a comebacker to the pitcher, whose throw to second forced the runner. Orefice took off from third and just beat the subsequent relay to give BLF a 6-5 lead. In the seventh, Fedyna gloved the final out to strand the tying run at first.
BLF formed an expansion team in 2012, conceived as a collection of new residents, softball aficionados, and refugees from other teams. The team is sponsored by New Jersey State Assemblyman Jon Bramnick.
Founded in 1969, the growing league added a seventh team in 2013. There are now more than150 Chatham residents playing softball on the local diamonds. Interested players should email Carol Nauta at email@example.com .
