SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- The Eagle Scout Service Project is an opportunity for a Boy Scout to demonstrate leadership while performing a project that benefits his community. Braden Allen of Boy Scout Troop 33 this week completed his project to improve the safety and appeal of the playground at Terrill Road Baptist Church in Scotch Plains.

The project consisted of installing a mulch bed under the swing set and play-scape, removing a broken swing, and installing a fence on the perimeter of the playground. The new fence will isolate the children’s play area from a stairwell leading to the church, air conditioning equipment, and the barbecue grill.

Allen chose this project so the neighborhood children and parents can enjoy the playground in safety. Delayed by bad weather for much of the winter.  The scout and his colleagues and friends completed the project on three successive weekends in March.

“The benefit is to allow the children of church members and neighbors in the community to play in safety.  The improvements are designed to protect the church from liability from hazards to the play area,” Allen said. “The improved play area will show its community that the church and its playground are a safe and fun place for children and parents to relax.”
