MILLBURN, NJ - The Millburn High School English department hosted the Born to Run 3K on Thursday.

This event brought people from the community to the high school track to begin the 1.8 mile run, which was a charity fundraiser with all proceeds given to Down the Block and the Education Foundation. The inspiration for the event was the book entitled "Born to Run," by Christopher McDougall, which was featured in the township’s “Big Read” this year.

The Millburn “Big Read” is a newly implemented idea where the whole community is encouraged to read the same book over the summer. "Born to Run" tells the story of a man on a quest to find out about a tribe where virtually no bad things happen—there is no cancer, no depression, and no obesity. Best of all, they can run over 100 miles at a time. This book tells of the power of running and what it can do for the body.

Ms. Siegel, the head of the English department at the high school and coordinator of the 3K event, said the book was chosen because “it appeals to the inner athlete in all of us. It is a great text to model inquiry with as well, as McDougall's entire journey begins with a simple question. That's pretty amazing, isn't it? That a single question can lead to years of research, an undiscovered tribe, an entire book and a running movement? That's how powerful questions are. And that is something to be celebrated.”

Teachers, students, parents and other members of the community gathered on the high school track after school on Thursday to run this race.

“It made me feel a part of the community,” said Kayla Burakovsky, a junior at the high school and a runner. "This event brought together all different members of our community for a good cause."
