Blydenburgh, Mitchell, Melchionna Lead Chatham Fall Honorees

CHATHAM, NJ - The fall sports season of 2013 was one of high achievement for Chatham High athletic teams. The boys soccer team, the boys cross-country team and the girls tennis team all won North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 state championships.

Chatham athletes and coaches were rewarded for their outstanding seasons with honors announced in The Star-Ledger on Sunday.

Girls tennis players Scarlett Blydenburgh, Alison Ramsland and Emily Sroczynski, field hockey player Danielle Melchionna, cross-country runner Will Mitchell and his coach, Pat Barry, and soccer player Brian Graham and his coach, Mark Maka, were among the top award winners.

Freshman Blydenburgh was named the Morris County Player of the Year in compiling a 20-4 mark at first singles, leading Chatham to a No. 10 ranking in the state, the Morris County Championship and the state sectional title. The doubles tandem of Ramsland and Sroczynski were named first-team Group 3 All-State, along with Blydenburgh.

Field hockey midfielder Melchionna was selected to first team All-Morris County, even though her season was cut short by an injury. Goalie Emily Buckman was named third-team All-Morris.

Barry was named the Morris County Coach of the Year for guiding the Cougars to the sectional championship and a No. 20 state ranking. Mitchell was named first-team All-Morris and second team Group 3 All-State.

Maka was named the Morris County Coach of the Year as Chatham surged late in the season to win the state sectional championship. Graham, who finished with 17 goals, netted seven goals in the state tournament and was named second-team All-Morris and third-team Group 3 All-State. Also earning recognition were Pat DiBenedetto, third-team All-Morris, and goalie Henry Stusnick, mentioned for his nine shutouts.

In girls soccer, Kelsey Burke was named second-team All-Morris and Morgan Maltby gained third-team All-Morris.  In girls volleyball, Caroline Beardsley was selected third-team All-Morris. In girls cross-country, Julie Hamilton, made third-team All-Morris.
