Blue Sky Café Opens in Westfield

WESTFIELD, NJ — Marcos Ramirez is confident in his cooking.
“Try some terrible soup,” he said, setting down a steaming bowl as one customer began to look over his menu at the newly opened Blue Sky Café.
After a spoonful the man replied, “Oh, wow, this is really good.”
“Have some terrible carrot cake,” Ramirez said to another customer as he plopped down a chunk of the moist, orange-colored cake studded with raisins. She ate every bite.
Ramirez can joke that his food is no good because everyone who tries it knows better. After years of running The Original Sandwich Shop in New York with his siblings, he and his wife, Jill Korcusko-Ramirez, recently set their sights on this unassuming spot at 1120 South Avenue West, across the street from Tiffany Natural Pharmacy.
The menu at Blue Sky Café consists of simple, unpretentious, flavorful food made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, some of which are certified organic. Sandwiches, which Ramirez calls “an art form,” are made to order at the counter, with ingredients like beef and turkey roasted in-house. Herbal mayonnaise is whipped up in the kitchen. Fresh bread is delivered daily. Homemade soups, many of which are vegetarian and dairy-free, simmer on the stove in the back.
Desserts are made here, too, including apple pie, brownies, cookies and Costa Rican specialties, such as moist, fragrant bread pudding flecked with orange zest, a Ramirez-family recipe.
Wi-Fi is available for customers, who are invited to linger over a cup of coffee in the café’s friendly atmosphere. Breakfast is served all day.
“We want to be the place for family breakfasts on the weekends,” said Korcusko-Ramirez, who knows all about feeding kids. Three of the menu items here are named after the couple’s own children.
Blue Sky Café is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free delivery is available for orders of $25 or more. Catering is available. Call 908-654-7000. Click here to see their menu.
