Summit Area YMCA

Monday, August 26, 2013 • 8:55pm

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – This fall, the Berkeley Heights YMCA will offer Recovery Fitness®, an exercise program for patients recovering from cancer, leveraging exercise as an essential component in cancer recovery. The program is designed to assist patients of all fitness levels with exercise that minimizes the effects of surgery and treatments throughout the recovery process. With a focus on healthy living and social responsibility, the Y provides the program free of charge to members and non-members alike in order to help cancer patients on their journey to wellness. The program will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Exercise is an essential part of recovery for cancer patients. The Recovery Fitness® program will provide guidance and resources to help maintain and improve physical activity, health and wellness. The class will help to increase energy levels and endurance; strengthen bones and build muscle; increase self-confidence and sense of well-being; reduce stress and anxiety; increase flexibility and range of motion; and improve balance and posture.

“After surgery and treatments, cancer patients often feel tired, achy, and emotionally drained,” explained Lisa Monaghan, Wellness Director at the Berkeley Heights YMCA. “This class helps them to regain strength, flexibility, confidence and peace of mind.”

The class is taught by Carol Michaels, a cancer exercise specialist with 17 years of experience as a fitness professional. She has worked with hundreds of cancer patients by developing cancer exercise programs for each based on the person’s individualized needs and situation. The Recovery Fitness® class is taught in a small group setting, to offer personalized attention, group support and motivation. Ms. Michaels will offer comprehensive advice, and an easy step-by-step program to help cancer patients begin to improve their physical and emotional health, to start the process of reclaiming their lives beyond the diagnosis.

The Recovery Fitness® class meets on Wednesdays, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Berkeley Heights YMCA located at 550 Springfield Ave. Space is limited to ensure personalized attention. Visit www.theysay.org to register and to obtain a Doctor’s Release in order to participate. For more information about the program, please contact Lisa Monaghan, Wellness Director at (908) 464-8373.
