BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - For the fifth consecutive year, Berkeley Aquatic Club is sponsoring a journalism contest, open to all New Jersey High School Students.  The winners of the contest will work with journalism professionals from Swimming World Magazine at the Jan. 10-12, 2014 CeraVe invitational held at Rutgers University Sonny Werblin recreation center in Piscataway.

The students will have the opportunity to write articles about each event at the meet, take pictures and videos, do on the spot interviews and make feature articles or videos and then post them to Swimming World’s website, all under the guidance of Swimming World Magazine professionals.  Each year, 12 students from across the state are chosen to participate.  Swimming knowledge is helpful but not necessary.  Berkeley Aquatic Club sponsors this program to provide students in New Jersey with a unique opportunity to experience real life sports journalism.

Celeste Cirillo-Penn, a 2012 graduate of Bridgewater-Raritan High School currently attending Cornell University, says, “Interning for Swimming World Magazine was an exciting and enlightening experience.  I got to experience what it is like to work a real event, and the hands on training and assistance I received has really improved my journalism.  The feedback we were given on our articles was instrumental in improving not only the technical aspects of my writing but also the content.  I would definitely recommend this internship.”  Ally Barth of North Caldwell and West Essex Regional High School had the unique opportunity of being featured on the cover of the print version of Swimming World Magazine as she filmed a race, wearing a Katie Hoff swim cap.  Allie was both a swimmer in the meet and a journalism intern.    She agrees with Cirillo-Penn and adds, “It gave me a better understanding of what sports photographers go through and what will be necessary if I plan on working in that field when I get older. I really loved getting to meet all the amazing people who interned and getting that opportunity to work with them and Swimming World.”

Berkeley Aquatic Club has sponsored a Winter Invitational Long Course meet for 22 years.  The meet, held in a 50 meter, Olympic size pool, attracts fast swimmers from across the country, including swimmers who have swum in the Olympics.  Previous attendees have included Michael Phelps, Elizabeth Beisel, Katie Hoff,  Lia Neal, Rebecca Soni, and Tom Wilkens all of whom currently hold meet records.  The meet is open to the public and is a great opportunity for young swimmers to see some of the country’s fastest swimmers.  For the past five years, the meet has been sponsored by CeraVe, a skin care product manufactured by Valeant Pharmaceuticals, a company with facilities in Bridegwater.  CeraVe is also a sponsor of USA Swimming.
