SPARTA, NJ-Beginnings the literary magazine of Sparta High School had a launch party at Greene’s Beans last week.  The 80 page glossy book contains poetry and mixed media artwork all created by the students.  This year’s Editor-in-Chief was Stephen Vocaturo. Vocaturo will be attending The Kilachand Honors College at Boston University in September.   Bridget Higdon was the Literary Editor.  Next year she will be in the Junior class.

Alison Hurley was the Art Editor.  Hurley will be attending University of Rhode Island where she will be studying Sociology and Criminal Justice.  Last year was her first experience with Beginnings.  This year’s edition includes an image of her sculpture and two poems.

The Photography and Graphics Editor was Sydney Liebman.  This is Liebman’s third year with Beginnings.  She will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall to study Photography.

Additional Beginnings staff members were Saira Aslam, Cassidy Perkinson, Dan Rogers, Sydney Slouka, Connor Sokol, Drew Vreeland and Cullen Walsh. Media Specialist, Mary Ann Hyland was the advisor for the magazine.  This is her last year as advisor because she has announced her retirement.

The event at Greene’s Beans drew a crowd of students and parents where they were given their own copy of the magazine.   Beginnings has once again been submitted to the Columbia University Scholastic Press contest.  Last year’s edition of Beginnings was awarded a Gold medal. The awards are announced in the fall.

The Editor-in-Chief, Vocaturo said, “Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this year's magazine so spectacular. Choosing which pieces get published in the book is a daunting task for the Beginnings staff, and the work represented is only a tiny representation of the immense talent Sparta High students have for the literary and visual arts. Without them, this magazine could not be possible. Enjoy.”
