EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - The East Brunswick High School Bears football team were defeated Friday night by J.P. Stevens by a score of 30-20 on the Bears' home turf.
This game started with much promise when Kyle Kelliher intercepted a first-quarter pass and returned it for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. It was the second consecutive week that Kelliher grabbed a pick-six. After the Bears were unable to muster any offense on their first drive, the Hawks blocked a punt for a touchdown to even the score at 7-7. Bears quarterback Kevin Hemmings returned to action after missing last week's game with a hip injury. He threw a touchdown pass to Kelliher in the second quarter, and a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Jon Gearhartz.
The rest of the game was a one-man pounding by Hawks running back Chiekuba Chukwuneke, who ran the ball 27 times for 275 yards, including three touchdown runs of 2, 56, and 37 yards, as well as catching two passes for an additional 13 yards. After a string of solid defensive efforts put up by the Bears defense in the past few weeks, it appeared that the amount of time they have spent on the field really caught up to them in this game, as they seemed to not have any answers for Chukwuneke who simply ran at will in this game.
The Hawks evened their record at 3-3, while the Bears dropped to 1-5.
The Bears head into November trying to find an end to their losing streak, and will take on Edison High School on the road on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
