EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - The East Brunswick High School Bears rode the running and defense of John Gearhartz, and the stewardship of QB Kevin Hemmings to a hard-fought 14-12 victory over the Raiders of North Brunswick.
Gearhartz ran for 133 yards and a touchdown , and could have had more if not for a couple of holding penalties that negated runs of 51 and 67 yards. Hemmings passed for a key second quarter touchdown, and controlled the ball at key moments that helped the Bears maintain possession during another key second quarter touchdown drive.
The Bears took a 14-6 lead into the half, and then had to survive a series of penalties and a botched snap on a punt in the third quarter, which lead the Raiders to their second score of the game, cutting the lead to 14-12. The Bears were able to fight off a furious last minute Raiders drive, the game essentially ending when Gearhartz, also playing on defense, intercepted a pass near the Bears' end zone.
The victory marked the first at East Brunswick for Head Coach Bob Molarz, with the many Bears fans in attendance getting to celebrate for the first time this season.
The Bears next take to the road for a matchup with Monroe, October 4 at 7:00 P.M.
