EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - The East Brunswick High School Bears dominated their game against the South Brunswick High School Vikings in the championship game of the Brunswick Classic Tournament at East Brunswick High School on Monday, riding contributions from many team members to a 70-45 rout of the Vikings.
In the first quarter, the Bears came out strong, but the Vikings hung in with them. The quarter ended with the Bears holding a 16-11 lead. Notably, sophomore Matt Ross and senior Amir Bell scored 12 of the 16 points scored in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Bears become more aggressive and dramatically increased their lead to 34-18. Throughout the first half, juniors Alex Fitzgerald and Tyler McNamara dominated the boards, leading to numerous opportunities for both Bell and Ross. The second half was just as successful as the first for the Bears. The third quarter saw the Bears maintain their lead, and in the fourth quarter they further increased the lead to 25 points.
For the game, Bell, who will be attending Princeton next year, scored 24 points, including five of six on his free throw attempts. Sophomore Matt Ross scored 12 points. Ross is earning valuable time and proving to be a great compliment to Bell as a second scoring option for the Bears.
Coach Mark Motusesky’s Bears continue to develop, and are starting to come together into what is beginning to appear to be a formidable foe for opponents in the Greater Middlesex Conference. Their record is now 2-1, and they next take to the road for a tilt Friday afternoon against Perth Amboy.
