The Basilone Bowl is returning for the second year in a row, and the special Media Day was held Tuesday to introduce the players from across the county.

For the second year in a row, the Marines Corps. are sponsoring the Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone Bowl, which pits students from every town in the county against each other in a special June football game. Senior football players are divided into teams, the Leathernecks and the Devil Dogs, to play the game in honor of the late John Basilone.

The 2nd Annual Basilone Bowl will be held June 26 at 6 p.m.

Students from every school attended the Media Day to pose in their jerseys and meet with their teams for the first time before practices begin at the end of June.

The game honors Basilone, who was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration, in recognition of heroism at Guadalcanal. In addition, at Iwo Jima, Basilone destroyed a Japanese blockhouse while going up against a bombardment of enemy fire.

Basilone was killed in action on D-Day Feb. 19, 1945, and was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously.

For the game, Bridgewater-Raritan High School joins others on the Devil Dogs. On the team with them are students from Immaculata, Bound Brook, Hillsborough and Watchung.

The Leathernecks is made up with students from Somerville, Montgomery, Frnaklin, Ridge, Manville, Delaware Valley, Bernards and Pingry.

The players from Bridgewater-Raritan this year are Matthew Eichorn, Michael Fair, Kyle Kiernan, Nate Melewski, Josh Robbins, Barber, Alessandro Castellani, Jack Fanning and Daniel Renna.
