TRENTON, NJ – Senator Peter J. Barnes III was sworn into the New Jersey State Senate today, where – after seven years in the General Assembly - he will continue to represent the people of the 18th Legislative district.

“I am honored that my constituents have asked me to continue to represent them in Trenton, now as their elected State Senator,” said Senator Barnes. “I am looking forward to starting this new chapter in the Senate, and to building upon my experiences as an Edison Township Councilman and as an Assemblyman in the Senate to best serve the people of the 18th Legislative District, of Middlesex County and of New Jersey.”

As constitutionally required, Senate President Steve Sweeney swore Senator Barnes in at noon in the Senate Chambers.

“I’d like to welcome Senator Barnes to the upper house. I have gotten to know Pete over the years and I can say that the Assembly’s loss is definitely our gain. He will continue a great legacy under the Barnes' name,” said Senate President Sweeney.

“I thank Senate President Sweeney, the entire Senate Democratic caucus and all New Jersey Senators for being so welcoming as I move to the State Senate,” said Barnes. “I look forward to working with both Republicans and Democrats to move the state forward. From property tax relief and increasing job opportunities to reducing the cost of college and protecting our environment and coast, the Legislature has a heavy task in front of us.  I am excited to roll up my sleeves and get to work.”

The 18th Legislative District consists of the Middlesex County communities of East Brunswick, Edison, Helmetta, Highland Park, Metuchen, South Plainfield and South River in Middlesex County.
