B.I.G. February 2013 Meeting: The Power of Emotional Intelligence

Melanie Wilson

Friday, February 8, 2013 • 5:27pm

You may call it intuition.  Or a gut feeling.  We term it “Emotional Intelligence,” and managing it is the topic for the Feb. 28 meeting of the Summit/New Providence chapter of B.I.G., the women’s networking group.

Guest speaker Julie Harris asks, “Have you ever had an experience of  'just knowing' something, without a clear rational explanation for why it is so? Conversely, have you known that you were about to behave in a way that you knew wasn’t in your best interest, but felt like you couldn’t stop yourself?” This, she says, is emotional intelligence and it helps us foster social bonding and survival.

“The good news,” she says, “is that we have far greater capacity for intelligence beyond the facts that we have stored in our brains, and we can learn how to consciously tap into these sources of wisdom.  We can also learn to recognize and shift patterns that are based in old, unconscious messages from our nervous system about what’s safe and what’s not.”

Come to the B.I.G. (Believe, Inspire, Grow) meeting on Feb. 28 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Twin Maples, 214 Springfield Avenue in Summit to learn more about this topic that impacts all of our lives every day—whether we are aware of it or not!

Each month, B.I.G. provides speakers and topics of interest to local women entrepreneurs. Recent topics have included how to write a press release, taking the plunge to start a business, embracing changes in our lives, brainstorming business ideas and marketing connections, how to use social media, branding yourself and your business, and speed networking. The group includes realtors, home stagers, party planners, jewelry sellers, interior designers, lawyers, divorce coaches, accountants, web and graphic designers, life/career coaches, chefs, photographers, etc.

“We also have plenty of members who aren’t sure yet what they want to do,” said Summit/New Providence leader Melanie Wilson. “B.I.G. helps them reinvent themselves, so that they can figure out what they like best and what they are best at and create a business plan that utilizes both.”

B.I.G. is a growing networking community of educated, intelligent, creative women. It is an educational, support, and relationship building network for entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs. Women may check out the first meeting free of charge.  Plan ahead:  the following meeting will be held on March 28. Check out the full calendar at www.believeinspiregrow.com

“We strive to empower women at all stages of their professional pursuits, from stay at home mothers looking to re-engage in the workforce, to seasoned entrepreneurs looking to grow their business and career executives looking to make a change,” Wilson said.
