NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Matt and Karen Lewis have lived in North Plainfield their whole lives. They were married here, are raising their three boys in town, Karen teaches in the public schools at East End, and four years ago they opened the SuperHeroes sandwich shop and deli on Route 22.
When they opened SuperHeroes friends and family donated some items from North Plainfield history for the walls. Matt turned the store into a mini museum of the town, with sports equipment, high school yearbooks, antique soda bottles, newspaper headlines and more.
“We’re looking to update the shop, and the memorabilia about our proud community,” said Matt. “We’re renovating the store, and are once again asking the people of North Plainfield to contribute items for display.”
Back in 2010 when they opened items were provided by people close to the Lewis family, but now Matt and Karen want to make the SuperHeroes mini museum even better. They’re opening up their request to everyone in town, asking for the best items to display.
Any items donated will remain the property of whoever gave the item, and they will always be able to ask for its return. In addition, Matt and Karen will place a note under each item saying who provided it to the shop, and give anyone who donates a coupon for 10 percent off a meal.
The menu isn’t just subs, but breakfasts, paninis, hamburgers, sausage rolls, vegetarian dishes and more. Thanks to that broad menu and excellent cooks, SuperHeroes was named the Best Deli in New Jersey by WDHA, and the best deli on Route 22 by The Newark Star Ledger.
Even with such awards for their culinary concoctions, Matt noted that sometimes people come by not to get a sandwich or breakfast, but just to look at the history of North Plainfield.
“People love coming in to the store and looking at the items they gave us, showing them off,” said Matt. “Or sometimes they go through the yearbooks looking for a friend or family member who passed or moved away.”
Anything related to the community is welcome. Items that are or can be framed such as maps or newspapers are excellent, as are three dimensional items such as baseball mitts or collectibles that can be placed on a shelf or table. Of particular interest are books about the history of the town and its residents that customers can look through as they wait for their custom-made meal.
Anyone wishing to make a donation can reach Matt at SuperHeroes at the Dante Plaza, Route 22 East during their open hours – Monday to Friday 7 am to 3 pm or Saturdays 8 am to 2 pm – or by calling (908) 754-1411 or emailing email@example.com.
