Autism Awareness, Interfaith Customs, and Art Therapy at Interweave
Wednesday, September 12, 2012 • 1:53pm
Beginning September 20th at 7:00 pm, Interweave, partnering with Calvary Episcopal Church, will offer an exciting new lecture series called Thinking on Thursdays, which will cover different topics each month. This month’s topic is I Am in Here: The Story of a Girl with Autism Who Cannot Speak but Finds Her Voice with Virginia Breen, and her daughter Elizabeth. Despite the devastation of seeing fifteen-month-old Elizabeth slip away into autism, her mother knew her bright little girl was still in there and she promised, “We’ll get you out.” When Elizabeth eventually learned to communicate, first by using a letterboard, and later, a computer keyboard, the poetry – now compiled in the book I Am in Here - she wrote became proof of a glorious, life-affirming victory for this young girl and her family. This presentation and book signing will be held in Calvary’s Parish House at 31 Woodland Avenue, Summit, NJ. Series is free and open to the public.
We live in a world in which we increasingly find ourselves face to face with diverse religious beliefs and cultural values in our own families, workplaces, schools and neighborhoods. Have you ever wondered ...What you should know before attending your cousin’s Bar Mitzvah? What you should say to your Muslim co-worker who is marking Ramadan? What you should expect at your Hindu neighbor’s wedding? Whether or not you should you receive Communion at the Silver Wedding Anniversary Mass for your Roman Catholic boss? Find out these things and more at Customs and Courtesies: Gracefully Navigating a Multifaith World, beginning September 25th at 7:30-9:00 pm (continuing for 3 more Tuesdays), where speakers representing the Muslim, Jewish, Christian and Hindu faiths will explain the customs you need to know. Don’t miss this informative and practical series. The first class covers Islam with Nadia Mohammed of Altmuslimah. Classes meet at Interweave, located in the Parish House of Calvary Episcopal Church, 31 Woodland Avenue in Summit, NJ. The cost is $60 ($50 for Interweave members), and $20 per drop-in.
Discover the story-line that guides your soul! Following Seena B. Frost’s model for SoulCollage, gather words and images to create a visual representation of you for self-reflection and sharing in our midweek forum My Story, My Soul: Creating Your Soul Cards with Director Janet Haag and Fine Artist Lisa Brown. Similar to tarot cards and angel decks, but unique and personal, your cards will help you to understand and appreciate what gives meaning to your deepest thoughts, feelings and experiences. Class meets for 5 Wednesdays: Sept. 26, and Oct. 3, 10, 17, & 24 at 9:30-11:30 am at Interweave, located in the Parish House of Calvary Episcopal Church, 31 Woodland Avenue in Summit, NJ. The cost for this series is $60 ($50 Members).
