Author’s Luncheon to Benefit Roots & Wings Westfield, NJ: Roots & Wings, a New Jersey nonprofit organization that recently expanded into Union County, is hosting an Author’s Luncheon on April 3 with Christina Baker Kline, author of the NY Times best seller, Orphan Train, A Novel. The event, to be held at The Park Avenue Club in Florham Park, is to raise money to support the Roots & Wings mission of providing young adults who age out of the foster care program in New Jersey with safe housing, education, counseling, and life skills in order to empower them toward self-sufficiency.

Anne Laird, owner of The Town Book Store in Westfield, will donate 20% of the proceeds of purchases of Orphan Train, A Novel during March.

“This worthwhile organization – and the youth they help - deserve our support,” says Laird. “And the book is a gripping story about the challenges of foster children. A girl who is aging out of the foster care system develops a relationship with an older woman who as a child had been part of the real life supervised welfare program called the Orphan Train which had been developed to transport orphaned and homeless children from crowded Eastern cities of the United States to foster homes located largely in rural areas of the Midwest from 1853 through 1929. The book is a story about friendship and second chances, and explores the ongoing challenges that foster children have faced for centuries.”
