SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- In his evocative memoir, From Kristallnacht to Watergate, longtime Washington Post newspaperman Harry Rosenfeld tells of his childhood in Hitler’s Berlin, where he saw his father taken by the Gestapo and witnessed his synagogue burning on Kristallnacht, the prelude to the Holocaust.

Rosenfeld was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1929 and emigrated with his father, mother and sister to America ten years later.  He graduated from New York's Stuyvesant High School and Syracuse University and undertook graduate studies in public policy and international relations at Columbia.  He served in the Army as a military historian in the Korean War.

Harry Rosenfeld has spent most of his working life as a newspaper editor, war correspondent, and columnist.  He began his career as a clerk at The New York Herald Tribune, where he rose to become managing editor of the paper's news service and later the foreign editor.  When the paper folded, Rosenfeld joined The Washington Post, where he served as a war correspondent in South Vietnam in 1969 and later oversaw Woodward and Bernstein in their Pulitzer Prize-winning expose of Watergate.

An integral part of Watergate investigative team, Rosenfeld will offer an insider’s perspective on the Bernstein and Woodward partnership, and depict the tensions and pleasures of working for the Post’s legendary Ben Bradlee and Katherine Graham.  Syracuse University's College of Liberal Arts honored him with its first Distinguished Alumni Award. The Anti-Defamation League cited his Watergate work with its First Amendment Award, and the Associated Press gave him its Freedom of Information Award.

Rosenfeld’s presentation is part of the JCC’s 5th annual university lecture series on Sunday, March 30 at 11:00 a.m.  The cost is $16 for members of the community, $14 for JCC members and seniors age 62+.  Register online at www.jccnj.org.
