SUMMIT, NJ - The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey will hold its Ninth Annual For Art’s Sake Benefit on May 3.  More than 90 national and international artists have donated art work, in a range of media, for guests to bid on in a silent art auction.

At a pre-auction, VIP Event on May 2, Curator Mary Birmingham will discuss guidelines of collecting, including:

1.    How to find what you like

2.    Where to go to start a collection

3.    Navigating the art market

4.    How to get involved in other collecting events

5.    How to educate yourself and learn about contemporary art

Guests will also have an exclusive opportunity to meet and mingle with the artists and place a sealed bid prior to Saturday night’s auction.

The Silent Art Auction, held on May 3, assembles a one-of-a-kind, juried selection of art work in a range of media created by local and nationally recognized artists.  Additionally, a “Connoisseurs' Salon” will also feature a selection of contemporary art work, cocktails, and premiere catering.

Artist and photographer, Joanie Swartz, a long-time supporter and student of the Art Center has attended the event for the past three years, and said, “My first impression of For Art’s Sake was that it was only for high-end collectors, but after attending the last few years, I now understand why it is so important for the Art Center and how unique it is."

Swartz, who is donating a piece to this year's auction, continued, "I bought a great piece from artist Jennifer Cecere that was within my price range, and it reminds me of a wonderful evening with friends.  It’s a really great way to connect with people, and help raise money for the Art Center’s educational and outreach programs.  It gives me great joy every time I climb the stairs at the Art Center see the exhibitions of young high school students from Elizabeth, or budding artists of all ages.”

For the past nine years, the For Art’s Sake event has helped raise more than $300,000 annually, which directly benefits annual outreach programs including, Artists with Disabilities and Arc; NJ Seeds and Young Scholars Program; SAGE Elder Care: Art from the Heart; The Connection for Women and Families; and other initiatives in Essex, Union, and Morris counties.  Arts educational and enrichment programs are also provided for more than 22 school districts across Northern and Central New Jersey.

For more than 80 years, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey has been exclusively dedicated to viewing, making and learning about contemporary art.  Comprising a renowned studio school and a thriving exhibition, education and programming schedule, the Art Center serves over 60,000 individuals from the tri-state region each year.
