Art “Outsider” Andrew Edlin to be Featured Speaker at the Opening of JSDD WAE Center Art Exhibit in West Orange

“Out of the Box,” an exhibit opening on Sunday Nov. 11 in the Gaelen Gallery at JCC MetroWest, highlights artwork created by more than 40 members of JSDD’s WAE (Wellness, Arts, Enrichment) Center.

The guest speaker will be New York City art dealer Andrew Edlin, an enthusiastic champion of self-taught artists who operate beyond the discourse of mainstream contemporary art. Since its opening in 2001, the Andrew Edlin Gallery has developed his niche roster, which ranges from the unconventional animator Brent Green to the estate of Henry Darger. Edlin recently acquired the Outsider Art Fair, which will hold its 21st exhibition in January 2013.  An ASL sign language interpreter will be available during the program.

The event (which includes a cocktail reception) is open to all, with a cover charge of $18.00. All interested parties must RSVP to jlevine@jsddmetrowest.org, 973-272-7148. (no later than November 5). 

“JSDD’s WAE Center artists know what it is like to live and create Outside the Box,” said WAE Center Director Marilynn Schneider. “Artwork by this unique community of artists is authentic, organic and imbued with the spark of discovery. We are delighted to welcome Andrew Edlin, who will help us all understand more about the influence that self-taught and outsider artists have made on contemporary artists.”

Ms. Schneider will receive special recognition that evening for her creative vision and her leadership of the WAE Center since its founding in 2004. Also being honored are JSDD’s “Fulfilling the Promise Campaign” supporters and the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, for its ongoing support of JSDD and its programs.

About JSDD’s WAE Center

Located in West Orange, NJ, The WAE Center is an expressive arts learning center for people with disabilities. Operating as a program of Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled of MetroWest, Inc. (JSDD), a partner agency of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ, the WAE Center offers artistic, wellness and enrichment opportunities to people of varying abilities in an atmosphere that supports and inspires creativity and fosters unconditional acceptance and respect between participants and facilitators. A dynamic staff of facilitators includes visual artists, photographers, writers, yoga and meditation practitioners, dieticians, musicians and actors who bring their passions to the process of learning. About Andrew Edlin

Born in Manhattan, Andrew Edlin graduated from the Horace Mann School, Bronx, NY, and received his BA in English in from the University of Vermont. In 2001 he opened the Andrew Edlin Gallery in Chelsea, New York City. The gallery exhibits both trained and untrained artists and in 2006 became the exclusive representative of the Henry Darger Estate. AEG also represents the estate of Charles Steffen along with a coterie of contemporary artists including Brian Adam Douglas, Tom Duncan, Brent Green and Domenico Zindato. In 2010 the gallery became the exclusive dealer for Thornton Dial whose current traveling exhibition "Hard Truths" opens at Atlanta's High Museum on November 1, 2012. Edlin recently acquired the Outsider Art Fair, which will hold its 21st exhibition in January 2013 in New York City.
