How Active Are You? Sept 22-28 is Active Aging Week
Exercise is important, especially when we age, as it helps with balance, flexibility and general health. The chance of falling is often reduced for those older adults who exercise regularly and the effort does not need to be strenuous.
“Exercise is very important, regardless of age and especially in seniors. It allows older adults to be healthy in the long run, improves strength, balance and stability, which helps to prevent falls, and gives them confidence and self-esteem to maintain their independence,” stated Julie Reich, Director of Special Programs at SAGE Eldercare.
SAGE’s exercise classes are offered as an off-shoot of the fall prevention initiative, but are open to anyone 60 years of age and older. They are held at 290 Broad Street in Summit and are handicap accessible. Current offerings are:
- Fun-to-be-Fit: meets weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm; $8 per class
- Gentle Chair Yoga: meets weekly on Mondays from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm; $8 per class
- Tai Chi: meets weekly on Tuesdays from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm; $8 per class
- Yoga for Parkinson’s: meets weekly on Tuesdays (resumes September 24) from 9:30 am to 10:45 am; full 8-week session costs $96
