PATERSON, NJ – Paterson suffered its third shooting within a 12-hour period when a man was wounded in the 5th Ward late Wednesday morning.

The shootings do not appear to be connected, involving different circumstances in different parts of the city. All three victims remain hospitalized, police said, but none of their wounds are considered life-threatening.

In the latest incident, police said the victim initially was hit by a car while crossing E. 18th Street near 17th Avenue at about 10:20 am. He and the driver argued, police said. The motorist then circled the block and returned to the area, where he fired one shot at the victim, striking him in the leg, according to the Paterson Police Department’s Cease Fire unit.

The first shooting of the three happened at about 10:30 pm Tuesday during a robbery in the 1st Ward and the second occurred at about 3:15 am on Wednesday when a 14-year-old boy was wounded while walking in the 4th Ward.

In the 5th Ward shooting, the victim told authorities he was walking home from a local bodega when he was hit by the car. Officers responding to the scene found the wounded man on the sidewalk.

Detectives are continuing the investigations into all three cases. Authorities are asking that anyone with information pertaining to any of the incidents contact the Cease Fire Unit at 973-321-1342 or the TIPS hotline at 973-523-TIPS.
