Read To Know, a local non-profit group that promotes early childhood literacy, will be hosting its annual spring BookFest. at the Paterson Free Public Library on Saturday, March 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Local children and their parents are invited to attend to pick from hundreds of free books to take home and add to their personal libraries.  Other activities may include story time and crafts activities with the children who attend.

This is the eighth annual Paterson BookFest, which was first held in the summer of 2006.  “Each year’s is a little different,” says Lolly Burgin, director of Read To Know.  “We get all kinds of great groups working with us from year to year who add something new.”  Last year’s BookFest!, at which Read To Know gave away 1,200 books, featured face painting and arts and crafts activities provided by the Paterson Girl Scouts.  The Girl Scouts are expected to attend again this year.

“We’re looking forward to a big turnout,” says Burgin.  “Come out and join the fun.”

About Read To Know

Read To Know was established in 2006 as a volunteer, non-profit organization that reads to and distributes books to young children in the New Jersey cities of Paterson, Hackensack, Teaneck, Englewood and Passaic.  Its mission is to operate a literacy program for young children in order to increase their familiarity with books and promote their love of reading before they start school.  Volunteers from the organization read to children at day care centers and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) clinics, often giving the children books to take home.  Read To Know also conducts parent literacy education programs which promote reading to young children and provide parents with tools to make reading fun.
