SPARTA, NJ - Members of the Sparta Community Garden gathered on the grounds of the Sparta Historical Society adjacent to the garden on Monday night to enjoy a meal together. It was a pot luck style dinner with tables and chairs set under canopies. There were even some flowers to decorate the tables straight from the garden.

Gardener Daryl Savage said, “Everyone was encouraged to bring food that was locally grown. It was a vegetarian’s dream. Everything was so fresh and so good.”

Bob Nicholson brought his Studebaker for all to enjoy. There was also birthday silliness to celebrate Lee Daly.  The children took advantage of the open field to play catch and Frisbee.

Sara Morrison said, "Eating local and growing our own food is becoming increasingly popular.  The community garden party was a great way to bring locals together, who share this common interest, to eat homemade food prepared with ingredients grown right in our gardens.”

"It’s kind of like a close encounters experience when you spend time with your fellow gardeners - who obviously share your enthusiasm for dirt, weeds, and fresh veggies,” said Pamela Ahlberg.   “A perfect summer evening.”

Fellow gardener Lorraine Tooley said, "One of my favorite evenings of the summer is the Annual Garden Party on the grounds of the Sparta Historical Society.  Members of the Community Garden gather around long tables under tents and enjoy delicious homemade dishes featuring local produce. The garden setting adds to the festive meal and lively chatter as we exchange ideas and stories about our own individual garden plots and our growing successes and challenges of the season.”

“It was a beautiful summer evening for our Sparta Community Gardens gardeners.  I loved seeing everyone enjoying themselves," said Morrison one of the organizers of the community garden.
