South Plainfield — In The Schools

Announcement from Dr. Genco

Thursday, August 14, 2014 • 12:00am

Dear Parents and Staff:

I would like to make everyone aware of a situation that occurred last week. One of the classrooms at Grant School had tile that needed to be replaced and the private contractor that did the job did not only remove the first layer of tile but disturbed the second layer of tile. Consequently, under the second layer of tile, because of age of the building, the old adhesive that was used contained asbestos.

Once we were made aware of the situation, we immediately contacted AHERA, our asbestos consultant, and closed Grant School until air tests and swabbing of the classroom and hallway for debris were completed.

We have since received the results of the air tests which were negative. Therefore, the air is clear but we are still awaiting some of the swab tests. I suspect that the classroom and probably some of the hallway leading to the classroom will come back positive for fibers. Once we know the areas that have to be cleaned, we will contact our consultant and supervise a cleaning firm to provide such necessary services. Rest assured that all materials removed from the classroom have been disposed of properly.

Although our timeline is not set, we do believe all of this should be completed by
August 22. Again, please be assured that the district is taking every precaution to ensure the health and safety of all staff and students.

Our Business Administrator is the contact person. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Alex Ferreira at 908-754-4620 Ext. 207 or email him at aferreira@spboe.org<mailto:aferreira@spboe.org>.

Sincerely,
Stephen H. Genco, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
