Area students seeking community service hours are encouraged to consider the Red Cross Youth Council which strives to further the humanitarian mission of the American Red Cross through volunteer projects. The Youth Program, with adult support, promotes development of leadership skills, social development and positive self-expression through community service.
“Our Red Cross Youth Council is a wonderful vehicle for teens to make a meaningful contribution to our community while learning valuable skills – personal and professional – that will serve them in future careers,” says Youth Council Advisor Mary Lou Stevens. “We have approximately 60 students registered for our Youth Council from schools including: Chatham High School; Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights; Florham Park’s Ridgedale Middle School; Madison High School; Millburn High School; Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child; Seton Hall Preparatory School; Summit High School and even the 8th grade confirmation class at Little Flower Church in Berkeley Heights.” Typically 20 – 25 students will participate in a scheduled community service activity.
Recent projects included the assembly of “Ghoulie Bags” to distribute Trick or Treat Safety Tips to area nursery schools. The Youth Council also completed a Veterans’ Care Package project which required the collection and assembly of items from dozens of area schools. These care boxes will be delivered to “Operation Shoebox” an organization which ships the boxes to US Troops deployed in Afghanistan and other Mideast locations. Additional care packages were assembled for hand delivery to the Lyon’s Veterans Home in Lyons, NJ.
