Addressing Postal Concerns

The Township Committee directed the Township Administrator to contact the Warren branch of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to express concerns regarding late mail, packages left at the curb, and mail delivery to wrong addresses. A letter was written to the Branch Manager, Mr. Byron Smith, on November 13, 2013. In addition, On November 19, 2013, Mayor Sordillo communicated with Congressman Leonard Lance regarding the issue of mail delivery.

 

The Warren Branch Manager, on behalf of the Post Office, responded to the Administrator's letter on January 24, 2014 and indicated the following:

 

  • The Post Office is always concerned when they learn that customers are not happy.

     

  • The Branch Manager apologized on behalf of the Post Office that recent service to residents did not reflect the professional service the USPS desires to provide.

     

  • The Post Office consolidated routes on the west side of town from 6 to 5. As a result of the change, the delivery times on those routes were extended as the carriers adjusted to their new routes. Also contributing to the extended delivery times was higher than anticipated parcel volumes and the change from daylight saving time. The delivery times have improved greatly in recent weeks although Mondays and holidays remain challenging due to high volume of mail.

     

  • The Manager is monitoring the delivery workload and striving to complete mail delivery by 5 pm daily when operationally feasible.

     

  • The design of the routes is based upon a measured analysis of the number of deliveries, the length of the route, and the volume of mail. Routes are periodically examined and adjusted based on mail volumes and community growth changes. Although the Post Office can approximate the time of delivery to each mail stop, unscheduled employee absences, unusually large mail volumes, and other prevailing factors may result in later delivery times. Since so many variables are involved, the Postal Service cannot guarantee a specific time for mail delivery and it may fluctuate from day to day.

     

  • The Manager thanked the Township for bringing this matter to his attention. He extends a sincere apology for the inconveniences caused to Warren Township residents.
