BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Adamsville Primary School kindergarten teacher Katie Tricarico was named County Teacher of the Year.
Tricarico's honor was announced July 31 as part of the selection of New Jersey's 21 County Teachers of the Year and the State Facility Teacher of the Year for the 2014-2015 school year.
Tricarico was chosen as one of the Teachers of the Year in Bridgewater-Raritan, and then was chosen to represent the district in the county.
"I find myself overwhelmed and completely beyond honored to receive this award, but even more exceptionally privileged to have the opportunity to work at Adamsville School and in the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District with such amazing people," Tricarico said in April of being chosen to represent the district at the county level. "As a resident and teacher of Somerset County, I couldn't be happier to represent this wonderful area next school year as County Teacher of the Year."
Tricarico has a Bachelor's degree in elementary education and a Master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Scranton. In addition to teaching, she serves on district committees, provides home instruction, coordinates parent training nights and more.
The County Teachers of the Year, according to a release, were honored at an orientation ceremony July 31 at the Department of Education in Trenton. Teachers had the chance to attend short presentations and interact with Department of Education personnel about educational initiatives.
"It's my pleasure to congratulate all of our County Teachers of the Year and State Facility Teacher of the Year for 2014-2015," Acting Education Commissioner David Hespe said in the release. "These are model teachers who represent diverse content areas and grade levels. This award is a tribute to their talent, dedication, professionalism and success with our students. Each year they serve as part of a valuable corps of teacher-leaders who can inspire all of us."
According to the release, County Teachers of the Year are selected at the county level by panels representing administrators, teachers, parents and county education association representatives. From here, a state-level panel of educators will select the New Jersey State Teacher of the Year.
The winner of State Teacher of the Year will be announced at the State Board of Education's October meeting, and then represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition.
