SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - "I had no idea what I wanted to do going into my senior year, but as soon as I took this class I was like 'Wow'."
That is what Adam Butrico, recent graduate of South Plainfield High School, said about his environmental science class that inspired him to major in the subject when he attends Rutgers University in the fall.
Butrico was the Vice President of his school's National Honors Society and was elected the class president by his peers for his final two years, and now plans to double major in environmental science and business in college.
"I feel as if there is a limit, eventually, to how far you can go working for someone else, so I want to open my own business,” Butrico said. “I feel like there are a lot more possibilities and it would be a fun thing to do."
Butrico was also a part of the Jerseyans History Club that raised money through car washes and holiday grams to fund field trips to historical sites around New Jersey.
Adam noted a particularly exciting trip when the group attended President Barack Obama's second inauguration last January and got a chance to meet and interact with another club from Texas.
Butrico got involved in school activities in middle school when he decided that he wanted to run track and quickly became one of the team's top distance runners. He enjoyed running because it was a fun way to clear his mind and meet new people, some of whom he is still friends with today.
As the class president, Butrico led the charge in preventing his class's junior prom from being canceled by selling enough bids to fund the event.
"I'd want to continue to have a leadership position," Butrico said about his future at Rutgers. "I love trying to help people out."
Adam plans to continue to run in college at the club level and do what he feels is necessary to make a name for himself and his family.
"There's a lot of school spirit [at Rutgers] and everybody seems really close even though it's a big school," Butrico said. "I want to graduate with honors, do well academically and be active throughout college."
Butrico gained some of his inspiration from his family. His father owns a contracting business and his older brother owns his own landscaping business in town, and Adam has helped out by working for them. He plans to continue to help out and possibly even work together with them some day.
