Active Career Group Thrives at Scotch Plains Public Library

Did you know that our library has a thriving Career Networking Group, that is open to everyone?

The Scotch Plains Public Library’s Career Networking Group was formed over five years ago, to respond to the needs of job-seekers in the local community.  Its programs are designed to be relevant to both the recently and long-term unemployed as well as to those in career transition.

The goal of the group is to help local residents to sharpen their job-seeking and networking skills, to navigate the challenges of unemployment and to connect with others who share similar experiences. Local Career Coach Donna Gerhauser generously volunteers her time, moderating each of the meetings and helping the library to invite experts and design programs which are relevant to the demands of today’s changing employment environment.

The group meets once a month, usually on the third Monday, here at the library.  Many of our attendees are “regulars”, but “first timers” are always welcome.  Each meeting features a guest speaker and highlights a specific subject.  We make every effort to present programs that are useful to both the recently unemployed and our more seasoned job-seekers.  Recent topics have included:

  • the Negotiation Dynamics system
  • strategies and tactics for career transition
  • the use of LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter as job-search and networking tools
  • resume writing and job interview techniques
  • becoming a consultant
  • starting a small business

This month’s meeting:

CHARTING A NEW COURSE – HOW TO MANAGE YOUR FINANCES DURING CAREER TRANSITION presented by the Scotch Plains Library’s Career Networking Group on Monday, October 15 @ 6:30pm.

We don’t like to talk about it and we seldom plan for it.  Reduced income during a career transition is probably the number one worry for job seekers.  Your strategy must include a financial plan.  Take charge of your transition: learn how to manage your money to keep your family protected when your job status changes.  This workshop will cover a wide array of transition concerns, such as:

  • Cash flow
  • Health Insurance
  • Life Insurance
  • Retirement
