BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - On January 10th and 11th, the Highlander Booster Club hosted its annual Fantastic Friday-Super Saturday event, its biggest fundraiser supporting 28 GL athletic programs. The residents of Mountainside, New Providence, Summit, and Berkeley Heights were in attendance and enjoyed the food and sports games.

Most of the winter sports had games scheduled, heightening school spirit. On Friday, the GL Varsity wrestling team won against Summit. The JV team also played Summit. On Saturday morning, the Varsity boys’ and girls’ fencing teams had meets in the auditorium as they were pitted against St. Benedicts and Lakeland, respectively. Though the boys’ team lost marginally, the girls won by a landslide. The Varsity ice hockey team lost to Summit that night.

The biggest turnout was for the Varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball games on Saturday afternoon in the Blue Gym. Both teams managed to clinch a narrow victory against their archrival, New Providence. The JV girls’ and boy’s teams played New Providence in the Red Gym. The girls’ and boys’ teams from Columbia and Deerfield middle schools also butted heads on the court in the Red Gym on Saturday.

In addition to sports, there were other activities for all ages. To keep the kids preoccupied, there was a Carnival Corner and an impersonator, “Tayler Swifft,” on Friday. Both days, the Bake Sale was popular; the cafeteria was filled with tables with representatives from Highlander teams and clubs, who were busy fundraising and selling merchandise.

Another exciting event was the unveiling of the name of GL’s new mascot, Hank the Highlander, at half-time during the Varsity girls’ basketball game. The Super 50/25-25-10 Raffle was announced at half time of the Varsity boys' game. Other raffles included a one week resort vacation at the Wyndham Skyline Towers in Atlantic City, two New York Rangers Tickets, an autographed basketball by Walt “Clyde” Frazier, and an autographed Knicks jersey by Carmelo Anthony. Gov. Livingston Principal Mr. McKinney won the autographed basketball.
