BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - There is a new addition to Gov. Livingston sports –- a school mascot. The mascot was revealed at the Booster Club’s Fantastic Friday and Super Saturday event on Jan. 10 and Jan. 11.
Booster Club Grant chairperson Doree DiSarno said, “There is no better time and place than Super Saturday for our mascot to be introduced! It’s our biggest fundraiser, and we always have a great turnout.”
The Booster Club’s mission is to enhance the sports experience at Gov. Livingston, which is the goal of the mascot. The Highlander mascot’s job will be to attend games to pump up the crowd and the players.
The school has never had a school mascot before. A group of students suggested a school mascot at games would boost school spirit, increase attendance and hopefully get the crowd going during sporting events.
In the spring, the idea of having a school mascot was presented to the Booster Club. In June, the Booster Club voted to approve the funds to purchase a mascot. Booster Club executive board members, parents, teachers, students, and the administration all worked together to create and design the school mascot. The Booster Club researched several mascot companies and decided to place the order with Olympus Mascot Group.
The Booster Club narrowed down a list of names to four. GL students voted at lunch on Dec. 13 to name the mascot. The options were Hunter, Hank, Harry, and Governor. It was announced at Super Saturday that the new face of GL would be Hank the Highlander.
