A Call for Paterson's Avenue of Heroes

Dear Council members,

I have nothing against naming Paterson's streets after prominent people. But it seems to be such a messy process and a political minefield.

In an email sent to you a few months ago I proposed a fair solution to this conundrum.  Why doesn't Paterson emulate New York City's use of a stretch of 6th Avenue which they  named The Avenue of The Americas. Every country in North and South America is represented by a plaque which is hung from a lamp post.   We could do something similar but in our case call it the "Avenue of Heroes". All we have to do is designate a portion of, or an entire street for this purpose.

Sponsors such as Councilman Tavarez could purchase a plaque (using a uniform design as a template) which could be suspended from the lamp post on a special decorative bracket.  Another plaque with information about each person could be placed below at eye level. None of this should be done at taxpayer expense.

This may help resolve the political issues of street naming. It gives everyone a fair shake and creates an interesting and educational space for locals and tourists alike. We could perhaps select a street approaching the Great Falls as our Avenue of Heroes.

A simple, neat and educational solution to this vexing problem.

How hard can this be?

Kind regards,

Michael Symonds
