Five hundred kindergarteners started school today in the South Orange-Maplewood school district.
Also reporting for the first day of class were students in grades one through seven, along with ninth-graders. All students will attend classes on Friday.
Cheryl Schneider, school board business administrator, said that redistricting in the South Mountain and Tuscan elementary schools was a success, with kindergarten enrollment at five elementary schools close to projections.
The breakdown of kindergarten enrollment as of Aug. 27 was as follows: Clinton, 67; Marshall, 156; Seth Boyden, 67; South Mountain, 103; and Tuscan, 121.
Teachers spent Tuesday and Wednesday preparing for the first day of school.
“We are really excited about the school year,” Schools Superintendent Brian Osborne told South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education at its Aug. 27 meeting.
