50 Shades of Gray Tile

While movie goers will have to hold out until next year and then trek to the cinema for the highly-anticipated 50 Shades of Grey feature, fans of beautiful interior design projects need travel only to their local tile store for a Shades of Gray sampling, as there are a huge number of choices for Design Inspiration using gray tiles.

The new neutral

Gray, once considered a dull or dreary color choice, has now replaced beige as the new neutral.  Think warm.  Think cool.  A healthy helping of gray presents a sophisticated palette which can stand on its own, or can complement just about any other color.  Silver, charcoal, slate, platinum and ash are just a few of the many Shades of Gray to choose from.   Gray can run the spectrum from white to black.

A light gray tile floor with a dark grey tile accent wall is elegant and classic.  If you search Pinterest for “gray bathroom” you will be inspired by the many beautiful style ideas.  A yellow hand towel and throw rug can really pop against a neutral gray background.

A warm gray usually has a pink or yellow under tone, while the cool grays pull blue, violet and green.  Play around with contrasting or complementary paint colors to help define whatever mood you want your room to convey.

Whether your room is modern or traditional, a gray palette will work.   A cool gray can be very soothing.  The yellows that are in warm grays can make a room cozy.

Choosing your paint

Color Consultant Cindy Gelormini of New Providence, NJ runs a business called “The Paint Diva,” which helps clients choose paint colors.  She agrees that gray is the new neutral, but warns about using paint that might clash with the tiles you have chosen.  “The problem with gray paints is that they always change colors,” she says, “Silvery grays can turn blue.”

She says that it is important to match the correct shade of gray paint to the gray shade of the tile.  “I always ask people to bring me their tile samples and I pull colors right out of the tile,“ she says.   “Gray can be unpredictable.”

She loves using gray in a mudroom.  “Gray is great for hiding dirt, especially when there are children or animals in the house,” she says.  “I love the neutrality of it.  In one of my favorite mud rooms we pulled the best gray color out of one of the floor tiles.”

Make sure you bring samples or your tile or photos of your room to the paint store to help choose your color.

Consider the mood

The choice of gray and the finish of the tile you use can change the ambiance of the room.

Think about the natural light that you have in your room when choosing your tiles.  Make sure you bring home your tile samples, and then check in on them in the morning, afternoon and evening to note changed hues.

The use of gray on a floor tile in your kitchen, for example, will really make your floor pop and could be a great contrast for lighter cabinetry.

Gray subway tiles in the shower with bold white grout lines cast a sleek, modern look, even though the tile itself is traditional.

Gray tiles are versatile and come in so many choices of colors.  So whether you are looking for a backsplash to set off your modern stainless appliances in the kitchen, or want to balance your traditional bathroom fixtures, consider the (much more than) 50 Shades of Gray available to you to create the look you want.
