Winter is here! But is your home ready?
It’s now January and the cold winds and snow are here! Here are several small things you can do now to get your home in good shape for the rest of season.
1.) Check windows for drafts
The majority of heat in your home is lost through the windows and doors. Check your windows to ensure the seal, caulking, and frame is in good condition.
2.) Drain your hot water heater
If your live in an area with hard water, sediments could be building up in your tank. Now is the time to drain it and check the tank for rust.
3.) Turn off exterior valves
You don’t want exterior water pipes to burst when the weather gets below freezing. Run water until the pipes are empty and turn off the valves to the exterior hose bibs.
4.) Clean and repair gutters
Leaves and small branches can easily clog your gutters, resulting in ice damage in the colder months. Make sure they’re clear and properly connected.
5.) Check handrails on exterior stairs
When your stairs get icy, you will want a sturdy railing to hold on to. Secure or replace shaky handrails on your porches and decks.
