LIVINGSTON, NJ - Bryce Gelman, 13, of Livingston is holding a 3 on 3 Hoops for Babies fundraiser on Saturday, March 15, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Heritage Middle School, which is located at 30 Foxcroft Drive in Livingston. The public is invited to attend, participate and donate to the event, which is raising money for the R Baby Foundation.
The fundraiser, which is being run by Bryce’s father, Peter Gelman, will be a double-elimination tournament, with teams divided up into elementary, middle school, high school and adult divisions. Games will run six to eight minutes. So far, over 140 people have already signed up. Participants can sign up here.
The event is part of Bryce’s Mitzvah project, but it is also one that is close to his heart. The R Baby Foundation was started by friends of Bryce’s parents, Andrew and Phyllis Rabinowitz of Short Hills, who lost their daughter Rebecca Ava at nine days old. For the last seven years, R Baby has worked to improve Pediatric Emergency Care for children across the nation.
According to the foundation’s site, the R Baby Foundation is the first and only not-for-profit foundation uniquely focused on saving babies lives through improving pediatric emergency care. R Baby Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that babies, including those in the first month of life suffering from viral infections and other infectious diseases, receive the highest quality of care and service through supporting life-saving pediatric training, education, research, treatment and equipment.
Bryce said, “After speaking to my parents and with Phyllis and learning more about R Baby’s dedication to children, supporting R Baby was an easy choice to make.”
Bryce also said that he hopes to not only raise funds, but also awareness that many Emergency Departments are not prepared for babies and children. The funds from this event will support efforts to improve pediatric emergency at the closest children's hospital to Bryce’s community, Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Center, where Bryce was born and where the children in his community, those attending and supporting his event, would go to in case of an emergency.
According to the charity, Bryce is a wonderful example of R Baby’s recently launched initiative ‘Kids Help R Baby’ program which encourages kids to get involved in philanthropy doing things they enjoy while also giving back to their community.
So far, the event has raised nearly $5000 for the cause. Those interested in making a donation, can do so here.
In addition, many local businesses are sponsoring the event, and have donated gift cards, gifts and food to the fundraiser.
