 During the Chatham Township Committee meeting held on December 3rd, the Chatham Township Green Team’s Chairman Steve Carroll presented the Sustainable Jersey TM Certification Award to Mayor Kevin Tubbs and the Township Committee.
Sustainable Jersey TM (SJ) is a certification program for municipalities in New Jersey that want to go green, control costs, save money, and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term. New Jersey is the first state in the nation to have a comprehensive sustainability program for communities that also links certification with strong state and private financial incentives.
Of the 566 municipalities in New Jersey, 240 municipalities registered to participate in the Certification program. Chatham Township is one of 34 towns out of the 240 registered municipalities that have attained certification in the first year of the program.
To become Sustainable Jersey TM Certified, Chatham Township had to complete numerous "SJ Sustainable Actions"—in accordance with detailed requirements of the Sustainable Jersey TM program. The Township had to complete a minimum of 100 "SJ Points" and had to submit detailed documentation to prove that the Municipality qualified for certification. Chatham Township submitted ten completed actions for a total of 120 points. Every participating municipality had to create a community Green Team and also had to complete at least two out of four required SJ "Priority Actions." Chatham Township completed three: the Energy Audits for Municipal Facilities, Municipal Carbon Footprint and Sustainable Land Use Pledge Priority Actions.
Sustainable Jersey TM program partner Donna Drewes, of the Municipal Land Use Center at The College of New Jersey, congratulated the certified towns. "Our winners are municipal leaders that are making extraordinary contributions toward the long-term goal of a sustainable New Jersey and world."
