By The Alternative Press Staff
12/18/2009

Summit resident Ruth Zamoyta O’Toole captured the Silver in the Veteran Women’s Epee event at the US Fencing Association’s North American Cup on December 5. The USFA sponsors three Veteran Division NACs throughout the year, including the Summer National Championships and two events open to fencers world-wide.

Zamoyta O’Toole defeated the 8-time World Gold Medalist in Veteran Women’s Foil, Marja-Liis Someroja of Finland, to advance to the finals. In the final bout, she lost to Amy Fortune of Fortune Fencing Club in Monrovia, CA. Fortune was the Division I-A National Champion in 1997, the Veterans 40 National Champion in 2008, and has represented the US in several World Cups.

Zamoyta O’Toole had fenced in the NCAA for St. John’s University from 1985-1988, and returned to the sport 5 years ago. In 2008 she won the Bronze in Division III Women’s Epee at the US National Championships in San Jose, CA. So far this season, Zamoyta O’Toole has won the Bronze at the New York Athletic Club’s Division II Mixed Open, the Gold at the Fencers Club Division II Women’s Open, the Bronze at the Absolute Cup Women’s Epee Open at Medeo Fencing Club in Bridgewater, Top Woman in the Robert Flynn Memorial Open Mixed Epee at Bucks County Academy of Fencing in Lambertville, the Gold at the Veterans Mixed Team Tournament at the Fencers Club, and the Bronze at the NY Women’s Epee Grand Prix at the North Shore Fencers Club in Great Neck, Long Island.

Zamoyta O’Toole trains at the Fencers Club in New York, under former U.S. National Women’s Epee Coach, Maestro Kornel Udvarhelyi. The Fencers Club, located a few blocks from Penn Station, is the oldest continuously existing organization in the Western Hemisphere dedicated exclusively to teaching and promoting the sport of fencing. Founded in 1883, the Fencers Club has been home to countless National Champions and Olympians including Beijing participants Keeth Smart, Erinn Smart, and Emily Cross. For information, visit www.fencersclub.com.

Zamoyta O’Toole is a freelance writer, Web designer, and online communications consultant. She is also a published poet and online novelist, and has three children, Roisin, Colm, and Liadain.
