Open H1N1 Influenza Immunization Clinic, December 12th
By Madison Health Department
12/7/2009

All persons in the CDC "targeted priority" categories for catching H1N1 flu and experiencing serious complications are invited to be immunized on Saturday, December 12. The Madison Health Department will hold a free immunization clinic from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Madison Ambulance Corps building, 29 Prospect Street. Appointments are not necessary but those planning to attend are urged to send an email to Healthservices@rosenet.org with "December 12" and their "targeted priority" status in the subject line. Unvaccinated children and those children nine and younger who were vaccinated twenty-one or more days ago and are due for their second dose are especially urged to come on the 12th.

People in the "targeted priority" categories recommended to receive H1N1 vaccinations at this time are: pregnant women, children aged 6 months to young adults 24 years old, caregivers and household contacts of infants up to six months of age, and people aged 25 through 64 if they have health conditions associated with a higher risk of flu complications. Healthy seniors are not considered to be at high risk for H1N1 as most have some natural immunity to the virus.

Each person coming to the clinic on the 12th (except children receiving their second dose who need only bring their yellow flu immunization record card) is advised to bring a completed copy of the H1N1 immunization consent form and a copy of the information sheet on the H1N1 vaccine type that they will receive. Both documents are available on the Madison Health Department website at www.rosenet.org by clicking on the "H1N1 flu and Clinic Information" link on the left side of the home page. The link connects directly with the H1N1 information which is posted and updated regularly. Please do not call the Madison Health Department which is not staffed to address individual inquiries. E-mail inquiries may be sent to Healthservices@rosenet.org with the question in the subject line.

Most children and young adults will be able to receive their vaccination in the form of nasal spray. Injectable vaccine is recommended for those with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, chronic pulmonary, cardiovascular, hepatic, hematological, neurologic, neuromuscular, or metabolic disorders; and those who have immunosuppression (including immunosuppression caused by medications or by HIV). Both the injectable and the nasal spray forms of the vaccine will be available at the clinic.

Other persons who wish to state their interest in receiving the vaccine but cannot attend on the 12th should send an email to Healthservices@rosenet.org with their target risk group in the subject line and their name, target group and phone number in the body of the email. Each email may contain information on multiple persons seeking vaccinations. Persons who have sent emails will be notified as clinics are scheduled. The Health Department holds "mini clinics" dependent on vaccine supply.

The Madison Health Department has immunized over thirty-two hundred people from the targeted "high risk" groups with the H1N1 flu vaccine as of December 1. Many volunteers have helped the department provide these immunizations. The Department extends grateful appreciation to all who have helped so far and welcomes people who would like to help with future clinics. Send an email to Healthservices@rosenet.org with "volunteer" in the subject line. The Madison Health District serves the residents of Madison, Chatham Borough, Chatham Township, Morris Plains and Victory Gardens.

The Madison Health Department maintains a "flu line" at 973-593-3079x7 for updated information on the disease and vaccination clinics. The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services provides a flu hotline seven days a week, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 866-321-9571.
