Large Crowd at Third Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service
By Faith Lutheran Church
12/1/2009

On Monday evening, November 23, about 200 persons attended the interfaith worship service for New Providence and Berkeley Heights, an event occurring each year since 2007. The Thanksgiving service took place at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Berkeley Heights, where Rev. Jeffrey Cochran-Carney is the pastor.

The participating worship communities were Westminster Presbyterian, St. Andrews Episcopal, Faith Lutheran, Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic, Temple Sinai, Union Village United Methodist, Islamic Center of Basking Ridge, Summit Jewish Community Center, Little Flower Roman Catholic, Congregation Beth Hatikvah, Sikh Community of New Providence, Diamond Hill United Methodist, and New Providence United Methodist.

The service began with a welcome by Rev. Jeffrey Cochran-Carney, which was followed by greetings from Mayor David Cohen of Berkeley Heights and Mayor John Thoms of New Providence.

The sermon of the service was given by Rabbi Stuart Gershon of Temple Sinai. The liturgy consisted of prayers, readings and song. The prayers and readings by the various clergy emphasized the commonality rather than the differences in their religious beliefs. The song was offered by a combined forty voice Interfaith Choir, directed by Dr. John Girvin, Minister of Music at Faith Lutheran. Linda Eriksen, organist at Westminster Presbyterian, accompanied the choir.

The offering of the service was given to the StarFish Pantry, a combined Jewish/Christian organization in Plainfield, which provides emergency aid to about 9,000 people in that area, two-thirds of whom are children. Since the resources of the StarFish Pantry have almost been depleted, the food bought by the offering will help meet the needs of the Pantry throughout the winter and early spring.

Following the service, the members of Westminster Presbyterian provided refreshments and an opportunity for fellowship.
