Alex Lachman (Livingston, Soph.) converted a 43-yard field goal attempt with the game clock running out to provide Johns Hopkins with a 31-29 victory over Thomas More in an NCAA Division 3 football playoff game in Crestview Hills, Kentucky on Saturday. The field goal capped a rally that began at the Blue Jays’ own 30 yard line with less than a minute on the game clock. Hopkins had opened a 21-3 lead at halftime, but frittered that away. They got the ball down to the More 26, where Lachman attempted to make his longest field goal of the season, which he knew was good before it even sailed through the uprights. "I was sprinting in the other direction when it went through," said Lachman, a Livingston High alum. "I was hoping when we got the ball after [More’s final] touchdown I would get a chance. As soon as they went offsides and we hit the out, I knew I could make it. We practice that situation all the time." The field goal was Lachman’s only attempt of the day. He also converted four extra-point attempts and averaged 45.8 yards on five kickoffs.
Mike Stoffel (Livingston, Sr.) started at left tackle for Hopkins’ offensive line. They allowed only one sack, while giving quarterback Hewitt Tomlin the opportunity to complete 24 of 38 pass attempts. Johns Hopkins next faces Wesley College on Saturday in Dover, Delaware.
In another D3 second-round playoff game, Tom Fischer (Livingston, Soph.) completed 12 of 23 pass attempts as Montclair State was bounced out of the playoffs by Mount Union, 62-14, in Alliance, Ohio on Saturday. Two of Fischer’s passes to Dan Keegan resulted in touchdowns; one was for 57 yards, the other from four yards out. He also rushed the ball twice for a net gain of six yards. Fischer, a Livingston High grad, also threw three interceptions and was sacked once. Montclair finished the season 10-2. Mount Union, ranked No. 1 in Division 3, is the defending champion and a 10-time winner of the crown.
