St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, in collaboration with the American Symphony Orchestra and the Newark Museum, presents a free concert entitled A Celebration of Romanticism on Thursday, December 3 at 5 pm.
The concert will showcase St. Benedict’s student projects including art books, a meteorology display, a spoken word performance, dramatic monologues and a student concert.
Working together with Newark Museum educators and members of the American Symphony Orchestra, St. Benedict’s faculty developed a curriculum with the theme American Renaissance that combined history with related art and science disciplines. Students learned about the 1800s, a time in America when artists created works that were specific to the United States of America.
"There is no better way [to understand history] than to have to recreate it," said Pamela Wye-Hunsinger, Chair of the Fine Arts Department, St. Benedict Preparatory School.
ASO has chosen a selection of works based on the American Romantics. Students will play with the professional musicians.
The works created by students were influenced by paintings from the Newark Museum’s Picturing America gallery. In response to the paintings, one of the classes created postcards, imagining they were in a painting, and ’wrote home’ to say what they were doing, while other students created cut-paper collages of some of the Hudson River School works. Another class wrote narratives on what was happening in the paintings. The science class studied and identified the clouds in the paintings, while the drama department selected excerpts from the Herman Melville classic of the 1800’s, "Billy Budd."
