The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is pleased to offer a lecture about "A Day in the Life of a Wildlife Rehabilitator" given by the South Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at Trailside Nature and Science Center on Wednesday, December 9, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.
"Throughout the year there are many times when our local wildlife could use a helping hand," said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. "This is a great opportunity to meet live animals in the care of the South Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and to learn how rehabilitators are trained to care for these orphaned and injured animals." The South Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (SMWRC) makes it possible for caring people to give orphaned and injured wildlife a second chance to live out their natural, wild lives. Often animals that end up at the Center require a specialized diet and medical care. Volunteer members are trained to help provide medical treatments as well as bottle feed babies too young to care for themselves.
In order to ensure that animals released back into the wild are ready to fend for themselves, rehabilitators work with them to break the dependency on humans and encourage them to forage on their own. Find out what a "soft release" is and how it helps the animals to get ready for life back in the wild. Learn how you can help your local wildlife and meet some orphaned babies that are currently in the care of the SMWRC.
There is no fee to attend this program, but donations to support SMWRC are requested. All donations collected benefit the orphaned and injured squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, bats, flying squirrels, raccoons, skunks and opossums. Pre-registration is requested, although not required. Walk-ins are welcome.
